What this industry measures

Take Rate

For marketplace and platform businesses, the percentage of each transaction's GMV that the platform retains as revenue — also called the commission rate or monetisation rate.

What it shows

Take rate reveals how effectively a marketplace monetises the volume flowing through it. Rising take rates signal stronger platform leverage and pricing power; declining take rates often indicate competitive pressure or a deliberate volume-first growth strategy.

Formula

Take Rate = Net Revenue ÷ GMV × 100. A marketplace processing $100M GMV and keeping $15M as revenue has a 15% take rate.

Churn Rate

The percentage of customers or revenue lost in a given period due to cancellations, non-renewals, or downgrades — the core measure of customer retention failure.

What it shows

Churn rate shows how fast the business is leaking its customer base. Even moderate churn compounds dramatically — a 2% monthly churn rate means roughly 22% of the customer base disappears every year, requiring constant replacement just to stay flat.

Formula

Customer Churn Rate = Customers Lost in Period ÷ Customers at Start of Period × 100. Revenue Churn Rate = MRR Lost (ex expansion) ÷ Beginning MRR × 100.

LTV

Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) — the predicted total revenue a customer generates over the entire duration of their relationship with the business.

What it shows

LTV shows how much a customer is ultimately worth and, when compared to CAC (LTV:CAC ratio), reveals whether the business model is economically viable — a ratio below 3:1 typically signals unit economics that need improvement before scaling.

Formula

LTV = Average Revenue per Customer ÷ Churn Rate. For subscription: LTV = ARPU × Gross Margin % ÷ Monthly Churn Rate.

CAC

Customer Acquisition Cost — the total sales and marketing spend required to acquire one new customer, including headcount, tools, programmes, and all associated overhead.

What it shows

CAC shows how efficiently the business converts sales and marketing investment into new customers. Rising CAC without corresponding LTV growth signals the business is becoming less efficient at growth — a key investor concern at scale.

Formula

CAC = Total Sales & Marketing Spend in Period ÷ Number of New Customers Acquired in Period. Blended CAC includes all S&M spend; segmented CAC can be calculated by channel, segment, or market motion.

EBITDA Margin

Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortisation as a percentage of revenue — a measure of operating profitability before capital structure and non-cash accounting adjustments.

What it shows

EBITDA margin shows the underlying operating efficiency of the business. For SaaS, it is a key input to the Rule of 40 and a primary valuation multiple driver — higher EBITDA margins at scale command premium revenue multiples from acquirers and public market investors.

Formula

EBITDA Margin = EBITDA ÷ Total Revenue × 100. EBITDA = Net Income + Interest Expense + Income Taxes + Depreciation + Amortisation.

Gross Margin

The percentage of revenue remaining after subtracting the direct cost of goods sold (COGS) — for SaaS, COGS includes hosting, support, and customer success costs attributed to delivering the service.

What it shows

Gross margin reveals the inherent profitability of the product at scale. SaaS businesses typically target 70-80% gross margins. Lower margins indicate high delivery costs that constrain the business's ability to invest in growth and reach operating profitability.

Formula

Gross Margin % = (Revenue − COGS) ÷ Revenue × 100. COGS for SaaS includes hosting/infrastructure, third-party licence costs, and direct CS/support team costs.

ARR

Annual Recurring Revenue — the annualised value of all active subscription contracts, normalised to a 12-month period.

What it shows

ARR is the primary measure of a subscription business's scale and trajectory. Rising ARR signals growth; declining ARR signals contraction. It is the single most-watched number by investors and board members evaluating SaaS businesses.

Formula

Sum of all active subscription MRR × 12. Or: (New ARR + Expansion ARR + Reactivation ARR) − (Churned ARR + Contracted ARR).

GMV

Gross Merchandise Value — the total dollar value of all transactions processed through a marketplace or platform in a period, before the platform's commission or fee is deducted.

What it shows

GMV measures the economic activity flowing through a marketplace. It is a scale indicator, not a revenue indicator — a platform's actual revenue is a fraction of GMV determined by its take rate. Growing GMV with declining take rate signals monetisation challenges.

Formula

GMV = Total Value of All Transactions Processed on the Platform in a Period. Revenue = GMV × Take Rate. Disclosed by most marketplace companies as a primary growth metric.

MRR

Monthly Recurring Revenue — the predictable monthly revenue from all active subscriptions, the most granular measure of recurring revenue momentum.

What it shows

MRR reveals month-over-month health of the subscription base. Analysing MRR movements (new, expansion, contraction, churn) shows precisely where the business is growing and where it is leaking revenue — more granular than ARR alone.

Formula

Sum of all active subscription values normalised to a monthly amount. MRR = ARR ÷ 12 for annual contracts. Monthly contracts contribute their full contracted monthly value.

NRR

Net Revenue Retention (Net Dollar Retention / NDR) — measures the percentage of recurring revenue retained from existing customers over a period, including expansion and contraction but excluding new logo revenue.

What it shows

NRR above 100% means the existing customer base is growing without adding any new customers. It is the most scrutinised single metric by SaaS investors — the best indicator of product-market fit and long-term revenue sustainability.

Formula

NRR = (Beginning MRR + Expansion MRR − Contraction MRR − Churned MRR) ÷ Beginning MRR × 100. Measured monthly or annually over a trailing 12-month cohort.

CAC Payback Period

The number of months it takes for a new customer to generate enough gross profit to recover the cost of acquiring them — a measure of capital efficiency in growth.

What it shows

Payback period shows how long the business is capital-negative on each new customer. Short payback (under 12 months) enables aggressive reinvestment in growth. Long payback (over 24 months) creates cash pressure and is a key fundraising efficiency concern.

Formula

CAC Payback Period = CAC ÷ (MRR × Gross Margin %). Result in months. Example: $12,000 CAC on a $500 MRR customer at 80% gross margin = 30-month payback.
